In a Hatha Yoga class we start with a short period of quiet to reflect how we feel at this moment, we work towards slowing the mind with use of the breath, then begin moves to warm up the body and prepare for our physical practice. In the postures and sequences we work between stability (stira) and ease/effort (sukha). A class incorporates:
- Asana, posture work
- Panayama, breath awareness/practices
- Relaxation methods/meditation
- Philosophy of yoga
Yoga can help you work towards increased flexibility and strength, it allows you to develop more body awareness of how you move in everyday life. The breathing techniques can help increase energy levels by increasing oxygen intake and each lesson ends with a period of relaxation.
Yoga means ‘Union’ and in classes the focus is on the integration of the body/breath and mind. In life today many of us live high pressured, stressful lives, as well as providing physical benefits yoga can help students experience a calmer mind.
You do not have to be flexible to start Yoga. Yoga is non-competitive, everyone has different body shapes, issues and restrictions and all movements will be modified to suit the individual.
Please wear comfortable clothing for these classes and bring your own Yoga mat.
